I will teach alongside Tara Masih. (2) in Worcester, MA, on Sept. 29, a 2-hour class called "Introduction to Self-Publishing," (p. 47 in the catalog) and (3) with Needham Adult Education on Oct. 20, in a similar class to the one in Worcester.

Welcome, Authors!

Self-publishing authors are invited to click here for information about what goes into the design of a book and its cover, and pricing for book design and cover design. You will also find links to other vendors, a reading list for more information, a sample book production schedule, and guidance on what to expect from the process.

Book Design

In my 36 years of experience in book design, I have created engaging designs that meet the needs of target audiences from the elementary to the scholarly level, and for the general reading public. Each book interior design clearly conveys the publisher's vision and the author's intent. Whether you have a complex four-color series or a simple one-color title, you can be assured that I will give it my full attention. I work in InDesign and Quark XPress.

Cover Design

Earlier in my career, I was a prolific cover designer, but lately, I have concentrated more on interior designs. Now I am designing covers again but I have also created a group of cover designs for imaginary books to fill out my portfolio. All the images that I used for the imaginary books are royalty-free and copyright-free.

Page Layout

Page layout (also called "composition" or "typesetting") is one of my greatest strengths. I am adept at designing spreads that are attractive and easy to read, and that integrate text and art seamlessly, while still fitting just the right amount of copy on each page. I work in InDesign and Quark XPress.

Illustration

Because textbooks often require numerous illustrations to support key concepts, I have become expert in creating and handling all phases of illustration packages. Using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, I have designed and created figures ranging from simple charts and graphs to large pages of combined graphics. I take great care in editing all illustrations to maintain consistency throughout a book.
